Interesting Review

June 10, 2008

I’m almost reluctant to post this one, because it lies so oddly between getting it and not.  I do really apreciate the fact that this reviewer took the time to give it a couple listens, though.

Credible satire of earnest songs, but then what?

The intro seems familiar to me, but once the song got going, that doesn’t seem relevant.

The earnest vocal delivery for essentially a novelty sing is interesting. You guys are playing the performance completely straight.

I think that choice makes an amount of sense. But I think the intended corniness of the overall track would make this tough to listen to a 3rd time, no matter how hilarious one would find the lyrics.

The faux Jon Bon Jovi background vocals gets it’s point across.

But I’ll say this, you really commit to sending up all of the songs like this, right down to the superfluous key-change/modulation at the end.

I think on this listening I’m smiling, but I don’t think there’s too much of a shelf-life your joke here.

Good luck.

See, I really like the detail and the fact that this person took the time to write a thoughtful review.  I just can’t tell if he’s missed the point about comedy music.

Coming soon to Vassar College:

End Of An Era

March 21, 2008

When I was about 11 years old, I constructed this, the K’nex Training Tower:

Before

I got it for Christmas, and distinctly remember setting up shop in the basement and finishing it within a week. I know this because I completed the construction just before leaving for a New Year’s party.

Since then, it’s lived in my basement, as you see it above. Over the years, gears have fallen off, the top has tilted more, and the motor no longer spins. But we’ve always kept it intact, and just moved it to wherever the action wasn’t, to keep it out of harm’s way. It’s been ogled, complimented, and abused. But it’s always been there.

Until today. We’re finishing my basement, and there simply isn’t room or need for the Training Tower anymore. It’s kind of sad to dismember its multicolored jointed limbs and throw the pieces into a boxtop. So, farewell, Training Tower. You shall be missed.

An International Hit

Looks like we’re popular around the world, as someone from Sweden recently lauded Weight Watch:

This is either very funny or very creepy, I hope for the former. Great contrast between the lyrics and the over-the-top arrangement. [...] And the melody has a good hook, better than many “serious” tracks. Got to love it!

We’re a European sensation, basically.

On the other hand, JT is a fan of prominent organs.

A review we just received on GarageBand.com:

Good lyrics
A wimsical adult contemporary song with some humour. Has heavy “church” organ. Good music performances and mix. Well written lyrics for this genre but not a career making song.

Incidentally, there’s no “church” organ in the song at all. One wonders where this fellow goes to church…

Aw, Shucks

In a strange twist of luck, Bassless Claims seems to be doing pretty well on GarageBand. Right now, we’re a shocking #8 in the comedy chart, and a surprisingly high #109 on the pop chart. We weren’t even expecting to make it to the pop chart (ha, pop chart) at all, so thanks to everyone who liked the track!
