When I was about 11 years old, I constructed this, the K’nex Training Tower:
I got it for Christmas, and distinctly remember setting up shop in the basement and finishing it within a week. I know this because I completed the construction just before leaving for a New Year’s party.
Since then, it’s lived in my basement, as you see it above. Over the years, gears have fallen off, the top has tilted more, and the motor no longer spins. But we’ve always kept it intact, and just moved it to wherever the action wasn’t, to keep it out of harm’s way. It’s been ogled, complimented, and abused. But it’s always been there.
Until today. We’re finishing my basement, and there simply isn’t room or need for the Training Tower anymore. It’s kind of sad to dismember its multicolored jointed limbs and throw the pieces into a boxtop. So, farewell, Training Tower. You shall be missed.
